About the Apartment Association of North Carolina
The Apartment Association of North Carolina (AANC) is a non-profit statewide trade association dedicated to unifying rental housing professionals through legislative and regulatory advocacy and member services. AANC is affiliated with the National Apartment Association and local apartment associations in seven (7) major urban areas in the state. Members join AANC and NAA by joining the local affiliate in their area.

Position Description
The Apartment Association of North Carolina is eager to identify an experienced, innovative professional to serve as its Executive Director. The successful candidate for the position will inherit a well-respected, fiscally-sound organization. He or she will have the opportunity to build on the association’s 35 year history as a leading voice in serving the legislative, educational, and information needs of its members. The new leader will creatively guide the organization to maintain and strengthen its leading position in the multi-family rental housing industry in the State of North Carolina.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Executive Director
Incorporates the Association’s mission and values into the organization’s vision and strategies. Advocates evidence-based positions, partners with a broad range of both members and organizations and viewpoints and is a creative problem-solver.
- Understands the complex issues surrounding multi-family rental housing including local, state, and federal legislation; emerging industry trends; taxation; regulations; urban housing needs; the concerns of for-profit and nonprofit developers, owners, and managers; industry demographics; and more.
- Navigates a variety of complex political and social environments, and initiates the development of relationships and effectively maintains them internally and externally, including with influential leaders to impact and strengthen the mission. Constituencies include local apartment associations, state regulatory agencies, and other real estate and housing trade groups. Manages lobbying efforts and engages in lobbying on behalf of the Association’s mission.
- Identifies trends at their earliest stages, collaborate to develop solutions and build partnerships to implement them. Remains at the leading, anticipatory edge of the ever-changing and complex apartment industry.
- Provides guidance and support to small affiliated organizations in North Carolina that function without a staff. This includes consultative services to aid those organizations in developing their leaders, developing and maintaining good governance practices and helping instigate their involvement at state and national industry events. Works as liaison and primary staff for the Board and Executive Committee leadership, reporting, and meetings.
Desired Skills and Qualifications of the Executive Director
Organizational Leadership
- Five or more years of broad management experience, preferably in a non-profit sector, including strategic planning, board development, marketing, communications, advocacy, and event management.
- Demonstrated success effectively leading a voluntary, non-profit organization within a complex internal and external environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading a membership organization with diverse partners.
Financial Management
- Demonstrated experience in managing comparably sized budgets.
- Ability to direct a healthy and growing industry trade association including the essential element of fund-raising.
Board/Volunteer Engagement
- Ability to lead and motivate quality volunteer leadership.
- Must be an articulate spokesperson with strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with board members, general members, community partners, public elected and appointed officials, and the media.
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with board of directors.
Partnerships/Public Relations
- Knowledge and understanding of other business, community, and political organizations that impact the Association, with a sense of how to leverage them to benefit the Association and its members.
Preferences
- Experience with the housing/community development field is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration, planning or related area; related graduate degree preferred.
