STEM for Her is dedicated to empowering girls and young women by promoting education, fostering awareness, and creating excitement around STEM careers. Our mission is to increase opportunities and access to STEM fields, particularly for underrepresented communities. We focus on equity—gender, racial, and socio-economic—through educational programs, scholarships, events, after-school programs, and competitions. We partner with Title I schools and schools with high populations of Black and Hispanic/Latino students in the DC Metro Area, providing critical programming and scholarships to equip the leaders of tomorrow with the skills and resources needed to thrive in STEM.
Position Overview
The Director of Advancement will report directly to the Executive Director and lead the development and execution of a comprehensive advancement strategy, including fundraising, donor relations, and communications. This contract position (full-time, with no benefits) is vital to building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, securing financial resources, and enhancing STEM for Her’s visibility and reputation.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nonprofit fundraising, knowledge of the local philanthropic community, and excellent communication skills. We seek someone who can connect personally with potential donors and has a proven track record of meeting and exceeding fundraising goals. This position offers an exciting opportunity to expand our fundraising efforts to align with our Board of Directors' strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising and Development:
Develop and execute strategic fundraising plans to meet or exceed annual revenue targets.
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with major donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Oversee fundraising events and sponsorships, ensuring successful planning and fulfillment.
Manage the full grant lifecycle: from identifying opportunities to submitting proposals and ensuring post-award compliance.
Grow and manage the annual giving program.
Regularly present fundraising progress and outcomes to the Board of Directors.
Donor Relations and Stewardship:
Build and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective donors through consistent communication and engagement.
Develop and implement donor recognition and stewardship programs.
Provide timely and accurate reports to donors on the impact of their contributions.
Communications and Public Relations:
Create and execute a comprehensive communication strategy aligned with fundraising and engagement goals.
Enhance the organization’s brand and public reputation through effective storytelling and an engaging social media presence.
Serve as a spokesperson for STEM for Her at public forums and events.

Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Communications, Nonprofit Management)
7-10 years of experience in fundraising or development with a proven record of successful campaigns
Experience in major gift solicitation and donor stewardship
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal abilities, capable of engaging and inspiring diverse stakeholders
Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving skills
Proficiency in fundraising software, donor management systems, and marketing tools (e.g., Greater Giving, Neon One, Constant Contact)
Highly self-motivated, energetic, and flexible team player with a "can-do" attitude and attention to detail
STEM for Her has helped thousands of girls and women in the metropolitan D.C. area learn about the exciting opportunities available to them in STEM-related careers. Each year, STEM for Her seeks to significantly expand outreach to underprivileged and underserved girls. With roots in the professional women in STEM sector, STEM for Her is committed to helping more young women across the greater Washington, D.C. region consider and flourish in STEM-related educational and career paths. Further funding will help STEM for Her broaden programs, including more hands-on exposure to the four STEM components – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – across all demographics in the region.
