JDG Associates has been engaged by the Kellen Company (KC), a top-tier, global association management company (AMC), to conduct the executive search for a newly created Executive Vice President position. Reporting to the CEO with co-ownership responsibility for Kellen’s association management portfolio, the position will be in the company’s Washington, DC office. Interested candidates will bring ten years-plus success in a senior staff leadership position(s) in an association(s) with substantive experience in both issues and services agendas. With oversight of KC’s executive corps for approximately half its full-service management association clients, we are seeking an executive with exceptional management aptitude and instincts, a strong track-record in setting, achieving, and surpassing goals, as well as staff mentoring, feedback, motivation, and drive. No less important will be a well-earned foundation in, and understanding of, association board engagement, dynamics, operations, and service.
This position offers the experienced and successful association executive an exceptional opportunity to expand greatly their scope of activity, leadership, and impact. For the executive with a clear and studied appreciation of what the CEO position is, it offers charge of a client executive corps to include executive director staff recruitment, mentoring, development, assignment, and support. Furthermore, it offers the opportunity to promote and expand the firm’s proven association management model in existing market sectors, as well as to explore new sectors for wider enterprise growth. Most notably, it offers the entrepreneurial association professional a unique opportunity to strengthen and grow what they already do well, i.e., association staff leadership, but in a privately owned, for-profit organization offering an opportunity for equity participation.
First Six Months
Ensure that the operational direction of trade association management activities is in line with the strategic direction set by the CEO and that information emerging from association management operations that may affect strategic direction setting is made available to the CEO on a priority basis.
Establish and nurture mutually respectful and open relationships with direct-reports, as well as all reporting to the direct-reports, to promote a transparent, positive, and mutually beneficial working relationship among all those in association management activities.
Implement strong, sustainable Board Governance, in all its complexities and of a breadth and depth that leads clients to regard the KC executive as an authority on the subject.
Become thoroughly familiar with the core AMC model and culture so as to be an authority on its relative benefits, alert to opportunities for its application and adoption, and thoroughly grounded in its for-profit nature.
Become thoroughly familiar with the Kellen’s structural operations, its approach, and its culture, respectful, yet inquisitive and curious, as to what might be looked at again.
Adapt existing professional relationships to enhance the Company’s corporate profile in particular and the AMC model in general.
Assume co-leadership of Kellen’s Washington, DC office and direct staff leadership a KC Company association management client.
Acts as a brand ambassador for the Company, representing it at client networking events, conferences, and related association groups.
Produces thought leadership content in area of expertise and holds accountable those assigned to them to do so in collaboration with the internal communications team.
Collaborates with Company leadership re staffing changes, including terminations, resignations, and other transitions while ensuring no disruption to services for clients.
Facilitates regular team meetings, oversees succession planning, talent development, and career advancement.
Oversees recruitment, hiring, and training exercises, as well as supports supervision, coaching, and regular performance management, involving HR when risks are identified.
Demonstrates leadership to teams through event participation and active engagement in Company employee programming and initiatives.
Oversees, ensures and enhances as needed Company practice guidelines on Association Client Management:
Ten+ years’ experience in senior association management, CEO experience preferred, CAE/IOM designations welcomed.
Strategic and financial management experience, able to create, read and interpret financial statements with demonstrated knowledge and experience in financial management, budgeting, and budget oversight.
Polished communication skills, both written and verbal, and thoroughly tested interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution.
Able to quickly establish rapport and trust with clients and take action that establishes credibility and builds positive relationships with all levels of staff.
Project management skills with demonstrated advanced level planning and organization skills to manage effectively multiple client relationships/associations at any given time.
Consistent and reliable; able to set and maintain an established schedule, manage time and priorities effectively, and meet commitments and deadlines.
Creative and strategic thinking; able to set customer needs-based and organizational priorities and preferences, as well as develop solutions to client/Company challenges.
Flexible and adaptable; able to manage effectively through change and transition.
Able to travel up to 50 percent.
