General Purpose of the Position
Following Kellen Best Practices, the Account Executive manages Kellen client communication programs and implements of a broad range of internal and/or external communications, public relations, social/digital, and content marketing activities in support of the client’s mission and programs.
This position can be filled in either of our New York City, NY or Washington DC office locations.
Essential Functions
Communications Strategy and Leadership
- May be lead contact for small Kellen accounts; following direction from supervisor, conducts proactive and strategic communications activities. Participates in budget planning and interacts with boards and/or committees.
- Makes thoughtful, considered, and logical communications recommendations on behalf of assigned client accounts.
- Participates in communication strategy development and executes to deliver integrated communications and marketing plans for Kellen clients and their wide variety of events and products.
- Proactively identifies additional services, in alignment with clients’ communications strategies that can be proposed and provided to clients.
- May oversee work of junior communications employees, and coaches them to develop their skills.
Communications Operations
- Develops and executes communications plans for collateral and marketing efforts, including event materials, training, membership campaigns, digital and print ads, press releases, annual reports, communications for email and landing pages, social media, general web copy, phone scripts, etc. Ensures consistent client voice across all communications channels.
- Develops marketing collateral—from writing compelling copy to production through delivery.
- Researches media lists and proactively identifies new reporters, publications, and outlets to add and build relationships with.
- Effectively targets media outlets (broadcast, print, and new media) and frequently pitches by phone, as well as email, and secures significant quality and quantity of placements.
- May develop social media strategies and oversee management of client social media channels (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
- Manages editorial calendar of events.
- Oversee eBlasts, ensuring accuracy and coordinating with other communications.
- Participates in events, conferences, and trades shows as necessary.
- Participates in internal client meetings to attain understanding of strategy and direction, attains client approvals, and follows up as needed.
- Identifies, secures, and manages speaking and thought leadership initiatives for clients; creates talking points and other key press materials to create consistent messaging.
- Manages ad hoc projects, such as website redesign, rebranding efforts, magazine redesign, digital ad campaigns, etc.
- Leverages internal and external marketing insights to optimize strategy and communication initiatives.
- Develops strong internal relationships with other Kellen functions to collaborate on marketing initiatives to meet Kellen and clients’ goals.
- Maintains deep knowledge of clients, their goals, as well as relevant industry and consumer publications.
Qualifications
- Bachelors’ degree in journalism, communication, public relations, marketing or other related discipline.
- 2 to 4 years’ experience in a communication role. Agency experience highly desired.
- Polished verbal, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated writing excellence when crafting press releases, media advisories, product messaging, blogposts, talking points, et al.
- Strong media relations/storytelling skills – proven track record of generating coverage for products and services.
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in spreadsheet, word-processing, database, and presentation software applications.
- Experience with association management software desired along with the ability to learn new software packages.
- Strong customer service orientation and the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels of the organization and build effective relationships.
- Effective planning and organization skills to effectively manage multiple client relationships/associations at any given time. Reliability to maintain established schedules, manage time and priorities, and meet commitments and deadlines.
- Knowledge of social and digital media best practices.
- Energetic and self-motivated team player who is accountable for initiating and managing projects through to completion with minimal direction.
- Creative and strategic thinker with the ability to set priorities based on customer needs and organizational priorities and preferences, and develop solutions to client challenges.
