Situated in either Springfield or Chicago, this position reports directly to the Executive Director and is part of the senior leadership team that develops and executes tactics to support organizational strategies.
The Assistant Executive Director, Membership Services is specifically responsible for leading ISBA’s membership recruitment and retention initiatives and developing partnerships that drive member value and engagement.
The Assistant Executive Director, Membership Services will supervise and work alongside the Director of Continuing Legal Education, Director of Section Services, and Membership Services Manager.
The Assistant Executive Director, Membership Services will also help develop and implement reporting functionality to assist with KPI tracking and data analysis.
The Assistant Executive Director, Membership Services is responsible for the operational success of assigned departments and employees, provides leadership and strategic direction to ensure seamless product/service delivery and member/employee satisfaction, with quality control and evaluation. As a member of ISBA senior leadership, the Assistant Executive Director, Membership Services actively participates in the advancement of the Association’s mission, goals, and objectives through strong management and support of current initiatives; innovation; collaborative strategic thinking and assessment; and thoughtful, open, and respectful communication.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management and Development of Member Services Group:
Oversee the Member Services Group, which includes the CLE Department, Membership Department, and Section Services Department and consists of 3 direct reports and 8 indirect reports.
Work with staff to develop objective performance measurements across all functions/services, to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal setting for all Member Services Group employees.
Instill a sense of accountability among team members by modeling tight oversight of individual and organization performance standards.
Supervise the Director of CLE and Director of Section Services to ensure the highest level of service is provided to ISBA members and the public.
Oversee support to the association’s committees and specialized substantive law sections and for membership recruitment, renewal, retention, and new member relations initiatives.
Management and Development of Membership Department:
Directly manage the day-to-day operations of the Membership Department and its staff.
Recruit, hire, and oversee training and orientation of all Membership Department staff members.
Supervise the Membership Services Manager to ensure the highest level of service is provided to ISBA members and the public.
Develop and manage annual budget for Membership Department.
Develop and implement strategic membership marketing programs designed to effectively recruit and retain members. Membership programs include (but are not limited to) recruitment, renewal, retention, new member communication and general membership services programs, utilizing direct mail, telemarketing, electronic communications, and print advertising.
Oversee the dues collection process and in doing so, work collaboratively with the Membership Services Manager and Administration & Finance Department.
Serve as a key staff contact for the ARDC Office (regarding the Illinois Master Roll of Attorneys) and other key organizations that interact with membership and membership benefits.
Staff Liaison to Standing Committee on Member Services:
Develop and manage annual budget for Standing Committee on Member Services.
Prepare agendas for and actively participate in Committee meetings, as scheduled/needed.
Ensure responsiveness to Committee requests/needs.
Oversee the annual budgets of Departments within the Member Services Group and manage the annual budgets of the Membership Department and the Standing Committee on Member Services.
Establish, monitor, and report on consistent, objective area performance standards of accountability.
Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls to ensure accuracy of all products/services.
Provide direct response and assistance to members, prospective members, and the public.
Effectively manage projects required to meet new and ongoing initiatives.
Serve on the staff Communications Group
Perform other duties as assigned
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required. A Master’s and/or professional certification in a relevant field is preferred.
Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in association management, managing membership renewal and recruitment operations. Prior success with budget development and project management. Experience managing functions and direct supervision of individuals and teams. Experience with marketing communications and using research and data analytics to develop marketing strategies to meet desired organizational objectives.
Technical/Computer Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in the Microsoft suite of Office applications required. Proficiency with association management software preferred. Ability to solve ordinary business situations and problems required.
Other Special Training/Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to travel required. Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively with high level attorneys and judiciary required.
Must be able to lift to 20lbs, stand for 7 hours, sit for 3 hours, and operate office machinery.
