The Director of Meetings and Scientific Programs will lead all facets of the strategic oversight and direction of the Society’s meetings in all formats (live and virtual). Responsible for developing the SSO’s overall vision for its various meeting, advising the CEO, COO and Society leadership on evolving best practices in the healthcare meetings and strategies in elevating SSO’s offerings to meet attendees’ ongoing needs. Oversees all aspects of SSO’s scientific meetings including planning, implementation and evaluation of the Society’s International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care, Fellows Institute, Advanced Cancer Therapies, Complex General Surgical Oncology Board Review Course, and other education activities falling under the auspices of the Society’s program portfolio.
International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care (ICSCC)
In partnership with the Scientific Program Committee, develop and implement a comprehensive educational program both in-person and virtually to maintain and enhance the Society’s ICSCC. Specific responsibilities include:
Develop and execute the scientific program for both an in-person and virtual format, including document preparation, work plan development, meeting budget development and registration.
Demonstrate creative and resourceful problem-solving strategies, managing the balance between leadership expectations and organizational capabilities to enhance the overall attendee experience.
Develop all programmatic planning and management components relative to preparation of the Society’s ICSCC.
Review and/or develop effective pricing strategies for registration and sponsorships collaborating with the Director of Corporate Partnerships and Donor Relations.
Provides oversight of the Society’s awards and recognition programs in conjunction with the ICSCC; communicates logistical details and arrangements with all specially-invited lecturers (ACS Basic Science Lecture, John Wayne Clinical Research Lecture, James Ewing Lecture). Oversees all abstract award processes.
Directs the Education Manager in the planning and implementation of all pre-meeting workshops offered in conjunction with the ICSCC.
Collaborates with the Senior Director Brand Management and Publications in the development and execution of all ICSCC marketing strategies as appropriate.
Provides oversight of all aspects of the abstract submission process including “call for abstracts” review and evaluation of submission process, grading of abstracts, issuing necessary reports and final output of data as executed by the Education Manager. Provides oversight of the scientific and poster sessions on-site and/or electronically.
Direct management of ICSCC’s mobile application.
Participate in site visits as appropriate.
Manages the vendor partners in the execution of the ICSCC including Freeman, Spargo, Cadmium, Mosaic, etc.
Specialty Live and Virtual Meetings (Fellows Institute, Advanced Cancer Therapies, Complex General Surgical Oncology Board Review Course)
Responsible for the strategic oversight of all aspects of the meetings’ management. Specific responsibilities include:
Manage and execute the budget, vendor relationships and contracts.
Provide oversight and strategic management of content development with the planning committees in collaboration with the Manager of Education & Meetings as appropriate.
Work with Director of Corporate Partnerships and Donor Relations on the fundraising strategy, including securing educational grants, for each meeting, as well as in-kind equipment procurement for the Fellows Institute.
Provide oversight of program logistics and evaluation and meeting analysis as handled by Manager of Education & Meetings.
Serves as lead staff liaison to the SSO 2022 Advisory Committee in supporting the development of the strategic direction and vision for SSO 2022, such support to include preparation of meeting materials, agendas and execution of activities.
Provide thoughtful, collaborative input to all program planning committees’ deliberation.
Supervises the Manager of Education & Meetings.
Manage and execute strategic plan initiatives and meet the goals and metrics established for successful outcomes.
Collaborates with the Senior Director of Education on new projects and proposals as they pertain to live and virtual meetings.
Implement various adult learning methods to develop participants' knowledge or skills while enhancing the attendee experience at SSO meetings.
Interact with related organizations (ACS, selected partners), consultants and other SSO staff/leadership on collaborative scientific programming as appropriate.
Assists with grant submissions and equipment outreach as needed.
Works with cross departmental teams including Education, Quality, & Research and Finance and Operations to ensure deadlines and requirements are met.
Performs other duties as assigned.

A minimum of 8 experience and demonstrated success in the implementation and execution of both in-person and virtual education program experience working in not-for-profit healthcare membership societies.
Ability to develop strong customer (stakeholder) relationships and navigate political environment. Relationship builder who knows how to create collegiality and build alliances, especially with senior volunteers. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the flexibility and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
